Augmentin: Drug Description

Augmentin is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of infections caused by different types of bacteria, among which are ear infections, urinary tract infections, bronchitis, and pneumonia.

If you are looking for a powerful broad-spectrum antibiotic, you should use Augmentin. It is effective against many antibiotic-resistant bacteria. What is more, it is approved for the use in children and even in infants. This makes Augmentin one of the most widely-used antibiotics.

Mechanism of Action

Augmentin is a medications belonging to aminopenicillins. It consists of two active components: amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium. The first fights bacteria by preventing them from building cell walls, which causes them to die.

However, many bacteria produce enzymes known as beta-lactamases, which make bacteria resistant to amoxicillin. For these bacteria, another component of generic Augmentin may be effective. Clavulanate potassium belongs to beta-lactamase inhibitors. It inhibits beta-lactamases enzymes and blocks their function. Clavulanate potassium itself does not fight bacteria, but it prevents them from becoming resistant to other antibiotics and helps amoxicillin to kill them.

Augmentin is approved for the treatment of the following infections:

  • Ear infections
  • Sinus infections
  • Skin infections
  • Infections of the lower respiratory tract
  • Urinary tract infections (including kidney infections and bladder infections)
As any other antibiotic, Augmentin should be used for the treatment of the above conditions only when they are caused by bacteria. Remember that infections caused by viruses will not respond to Augmentin.

Your doctor may recommend that you use Augmentin for other purposes than listed above. Off-label uses of Augmentin include the treatment of other bacterial infections.

Breast-feeding mothers should not use Augmentin, because its components may pass into milk.

How supplied

Augmentin comes in the form of tablets, suspensions, and chewable tablets. Augmentin pills are available in two strengths: Augmentin 375 mg and Augmentin 635 mg.

Dosage and Administration

It is recommended to take Augmentin with meals to prevent stomach upset. Augmentin tablets should be swallowed without chewing or breaking them. Chew chewable tablets completely before swallowing. If you are using suspension form of the drug, shake it thoroughly before using.

Take Augmentin as recommended by your doctor or health care provider. Do not take smaller or larger doses without consulting your doctor. Larger doses will not increase the effectiveness of the drug. It is also important not to stop taking Augmentin before you have finished the full prescribed treatment course. Inappropriate use can cause antibiotic resistance. You should not switch from one medication form to another unless your doctor has instructed you to do so.

Augmentin works best when the amount of its active components in your blood is kept at an even level. Therefore, take this medication at evenly spaced intervals.

For most infections, the usual recommended dosage of Augmentin for adults is 250 mg taken three times a day every 8 hours or 500 mg taken every 12 hours. For severe infections, higher dose of 875 mg taken every 12 hours may be prescribed.

Dosing of Augmentin for children is determined by their weight. The usual dose for children weighting more than 40 kg is the same as for adults. The recommended dose of Augmentin for children weighting less than 40 kg and older than 3 months of age ranges from 20 mg/kg to 40 mg/kg per day, taken in divided doses every 8 hours. Younger infants are usually prescribed 30 mg/kg per day, given in divided doses every 12 hours.

Your dose may differ from the above-mentioned ones. Your dosage of Augmentin will vary depending on the following factors: the type of infection, the severity of infection, your age, and your weight.

You will find more information on how Augmentin should be used in the Patient Information Leaflet. It is important that you read and understand this information before using the drug. Consult your health care provider regarding any questions about Augmentin.
