Infertility (inability to become pregnant) is a common problem affecting about 10% of women. In most cases female infertility is caused by ovulation problems, such as absent or irregular menstrual periods. Other causes of infertility in females include polycystic ovarian syndrome, uterine fibroids, and blocked Fallopian tubes.

No matter what causes infertility, this condition can be treated. Fortunately, most cases of infertility are treated with medications, and Clomifene is usually a drug of choice.

Use Clomifene and it will boost your chances of getting pregnant.

Clomifene – Drug Information

Clomifene causes ovulation in women who can’t get pregnant due to:

  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • Anovulatory cycle
  • Amenorrhea-galactorrhea syndrome
  • Psychogenic amenorrhea
  • Post-oral-contraceptive amenorrhea
  • Secondary amenorrhea
Most commonly Clomifene is prescribed if a woman has anovulatory cycle or irregular cycle. Use Clomifene only if you do not have abnormal bleeding, blocked fallopian tubes, ovarian cyst, and liver problems.

Sometimes generic Clomifene may be used for treating unexplained infertility. Off-label uses of Clomifene include the treatment of oligospermia in men.

Mechanism of Action

Clomifene contains the active component clomiphene, which stimulates ovulation (the production of eggs by the ovaries) by blocking the action of the female hormone estrogen. This blocking causes the increase of levels of two female hormones essential for ovulation. These hormones are follicle-stimulating hormone (which causes the ripening of the eggs) and luteinizing hormone (which causes the release of eggs).

Ovulation usually occurs between the fifth and the ninth day after you have taken the last dose of Clomifene. Some patients ovulate and get pregnant in the first month of using Clomifene. But it may also take several month of treatment with Clomifene for a woman to ovulate. You may undergo ultrasound monitoring to see if your ovaries respond to treatment, or you can do tests to determine ovulation.

Clomifene’s Effectiveness

Clomifene is the most widely prescribed of all fertility medications. The studies have shown that up to 80% of women being treated with Clomifene will ovulate, and 40% of those who ovulate will conceive within six month of Clomifene use.

With the help of Clomifene thousands of women get a chance to become pregnant. Unlike other fertility drugs, Clomifene has fewer side effects. And above all, Clomifene is a powerful medication that effectively helps women get pregnant. For that reason, patients looking for an effective treatment often use Clomifene for ovulation stimulation.

Dosage and Administration

When taking Clomifene, follow the direction that your health care provider gives you.

The recommended initial dose of Clomifene is 50 mg taken for five days. There is no need in increasing the dose if ovulation occurs at this dosage. However, if there is no response to the treatment, the dose may be increased to 100 mg. If there is no response after three Clomifene courses, the treatment should be discontinued. It is also not recommended to increase the duration of treatment or dosage beyond 100 mg for 5 days.

The medication is taken cyclically, for up to 6 month. The break between the cycles should be at least 30 days. In rare cases, treatment may last for a year, because long-term treatment increases the chances of getting pregnant.

If you have regular menstrual cycle, start taking Clomifene on the 3d or 5th day of your cycle. If you do not have regular periods or if you have no menstrual periods, start taking Clomifene at any time.
