The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has accepted the National Meritorious Award of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) of Nigeria, due to be presented to him by President Muhammadu Buhari on October 11 as part of activities marking the 62nd independence from the country. Day.

The nomination letter for the award, the highest national honor conferred on any Nigerian citizen for their contribution to the development of the nation, except the President and Vice President, was officially presented to the First Class Traditional Ruler. by His Royal Highness, Sule Idaiye, Imma of Somorika last Friday at his Palace in Benin City.

A statement from the chief press secretary to the Oba of Benin, Iguobaro Osaigbovo, said there was royal splendor and embrace when the personal letter dated September 16, 2022 was read in the presence of palace officials, palace chiefs from Benin, dukes, the royal family and guests who came to pay homage to the traditional chief in the Palace.

The letter was dated 16 2022 and issued on behalf of the President by the National Honors and Awards Office of the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Abuja,

The statement describes the award of recognition by the Federal Government as “a record year of celebration for the HRM, Oba Ewuare II and the Kingdom of Benin as it coincides with the month of the 6th anniversary of the crowning of the Royal Father.

“Furthermore, the recognition also comes within a calendar year after Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the UK, Ambassador Sarafa Ishola, presented two repatriated artefacts – a Cockerel sculpture from Jesus College in Great Britain. Brittany and the bronze shard of Uhun Oba Elao, otherwise known as the King’s head, from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, to the Grand Throne of Benin, via Presidential Directive,” the statement added.

The Oba thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for this unprecedented decision and prayed to God and his ancestors to guide the nation in addition to good health, wisdom to discharge his duties and the responsibility placed upon his shoulders by his ancestors.

“This announcement has come and we are grateful to Almighty God and our ancestors. I’m just as excited as you. We are happy with the news. I take this opportunity to thank Mr. President.

“Last year he asked the Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK, Ambassador, to personally bring the two artifacts from Scotland and Aberdeen and present them to me at the Oba Palace. It was an unprecedented decision by the President.

“We are grateful to Mr. President, and now he has honored us with the title of Commander of the Federal Republic. We will order well. I pray that Almighty God will give me more wisdom to perform my duties and responsibilities that have been placed on my shoulders,” Oba Ewuare II said in the statement.
