The Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II of the Kingdom of Benin, is due to receive the prestigious National Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) of Nigeria award on October 11, 2022 by President Muhammadu Buhari as part of of activities marking the 62nd anniversary of Nigeria’s independence.
The nomination letter for the award was delivered to the Royal Father by the Imma of Somorika, Sule Idaiye, this weekend at his palace in Benin.
The CFR is the highest honor conferred on any Nigerian citizen for their contribution to the development of the nation, except the Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic, GCFR, and the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger, GCON. , awarded to the President and Vice-President respectively.
The Nigerian National Honors were instituted by the National Honors Act No. 5 of 1964, under the First Nigerian Republic, to honor deserving Nigerians.
A statement by Chief Press Secretary, CPS, at the Omo N’Oba, Iguobaro Osaigbovo, on Sunday said the Beninese monarch had accepted the honor.
According to him, “There was a royal splendor and embrace when the personal letter dated September 16, 2022 was read in the presence of palace officials, Beninese palace heads, dukes, royal family and guests, come to pay homage to the traditional chief. in the palace.
“The letter was issued on behalf of the President by the National Honors and Awards Office of the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Abuja,
“The Recognition Award which is scheduled for October 11 by the Federal Government is indeed a record year of celebration for the HRM, Oba Ewuare II and the Kingdom of Benin as it coincides with the month of the sixth anniversary of the crowning of the Royal Father .
“Furthermore, the recognition also comes in the calendar year after Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the UK, Ambassador Sarafa Ishola, presented two repatriated items – a Cockerel sculpture from Jesus College in Britain and the bronze bust of Uhun Oba Elao, otherwise known as the Head of the King, from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, to the Grand Throne of Benin, via Presidential Directive”.
Osaigbovo further said that Oba Ewuare II thanked President Buhari for this unprecedented decision and prayed to God and his ancestors to guide the nation and grant him good health and wisdom to discharge the duties and responsibilities entrusted to him by his ancestors.
He further quoted the Benin monarch saying, “This announcement has come, and we are grateful to Almighty God and our ancestors. I’m just as excited as you. We are happy with the news. I take this opportunity to thank Mr. President.
“Last year he asked Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the UK, Ambassador Ishola, to personally bring the two items from Scotland and Aberdeen and present them to me at the palace. It was an unprecedented move by the president.
“We are grateful to Mr. President; and now he has honored us with the title of Commander of the Federal Republic. We will order well. I pray that Almighty God will give me more wisdom to fulfill my duties and responsibilities that have been placed on my shoulders”.
Prior to ascending the throne on October 20, 2016, the revered Oba of Benin worked at the United Nations between 1981 and 1982. He also served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Angola and Sweden, with accreditation to Norway, Denmark and the Republic of Finland. He also served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Italy.
